From Images to a Body of Work: Building a Practice With Intent

Having good images is not enough. This session is about building something that curators, galleries, and grant panels recognise as a coherent body of work.

There is a difference between a collection of good images and a body of work with a point of view. Most photographers have the images. What they are missing is the coherence, the thread that connects the work and makes it readable to the people on the other side of the table.

In this class, Aida Muluneh walks you through what it actually means to build a practice with intent. Whether you are a commercial photographer looking to move into fine art or a documentary photographer working toward your first solo show, this session gives you the tools to develop your work with direction, recognise when it is ready, and present it in a way that gets taken seriously.
This is not a class about making more images. It is about understanding what you already have and what to do with it.

  • What distinguishes a body of work from a collection of images
  • How to identify the point of view that runs through your work
  • How to develop a project with longevity and direction
  • How to know when your work is ready to show
  • What curators, galleries, and grant panels are actually looking for when they review a portfolio
  • How to present a body of work for different contexts including exhibitions, open calls, and grant applications

Aïda Muluneh is an internationally recognized Ethiopian artist, photographer, filmmaker, educator, curator, and cultural architect whose career has been defined by building platforms as much as producing images. Her practice sits at the intersection of visual art, education, cultural diplomacy, and institution building, with more than 18 years of experience creating programs, exhibitions, workshops, festivals, and cross continental initiatives that expand how African visual culture is produced, taught, and circulated. A Canon Ambassador and National Geographic Explorer, she has developed a body of work and a public career that position her as one of the leading voices shaping contemporary African photography and visual storytelling.

Every AFF Learn session is live and virtual. You attend in real time, which means you can ask questions, join the discussion, and get direct responses from the instructor.

Yes. If you are registered and cannot attend on the day, you will receive access to the recording for a limited period after the session. We recommend attending live — the conversation in the room is part of the value.

AFF Learn is built for  photographers who are serious about their practice. Whether you shoot fine art, documentary, commercial or weddings, these sessions address the business and career questions that most photography education never covers. If you are just starting out, you are still welcome but the sessions assume you already know your way around a camera.

We keep each session small on purpose. A smaller room means real conversation, direct feedback, and the ability to ask the questions that actually matter to your specific situation. This is not a webinar — it is a working session.
A stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Coming with questions is encouraged.

You will receive a confirmation email and we will send another email with your session link, date, time, and everything you need to join.

Still have questions? We are happy to help. If you have any questions about the session, payment, or anything else, reach out to us directly at info@africafotofair.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
