Breaking Into Galleries: A Photographer's Guide to Representation

Getting into a gallery is not about luck. It is about understanding how the system works and knowing how to position yourself inside it. This session gives you that.

Gallery representation is one of the most misunderstood milestones in a photography career. Most photographers either chase it without knowing what they are signing up for, or avoid it entirely because it feels out of reach. Neither approach serves you.
In this class, Aida Muluneh walks you through how galleries actually work, what they are looking for, and how to approach them in a way that gets you taken seriously. You will leave with a clear understanding of what a representation agreement means, what it costs you, what it earns you, and how to decide whether representation is even the right move for where you are right now.
This is not a class about being discovered. It is about being prepared.

  • How galleries make their decisions and what they look for in a photographer
  • How to approach a gallery without getting it wrong
  • What a representation agreement actually contains and what to watch out for
  • How gallery commission structures work and how to price your work accordingly
  • When representation is the right move and when going independent makes more sense
  • How photographers from Africa and the global south are navigating the international gallery system

Aïda Muluneh

Aïda Muluneh is an internationally recognized Ethiopian artist, photographer, filmmaker, educator, curator, and cultural architect whose career has been defined by building platforms as much as producing images. Her practice sits at the intersection of visual art, education, cultural diplomacy, and institution building, with more than 18 years of experience creating programs, exhibitions, workshops, festivals, and cross continental initiatives that expand how African visual culture is produced, taught, and circulated. A Canon Ambassador and National Geographic Explorer, she has developed a body of work and a public career that position her as one of the leading voices shaping contemporary African photography and visual storytelling.

Every AFF Learn session is live and virtual. You attend in real time, which means you can ask questions, join the discussion, and get direct responses from the instructor.

Yes. If you are registered and cannot attend on the day, you will receive access to the recording for a limited period after the session. We recommend attending live — the conversation in the room is part of the value.

AFF Learn is built for  photographers who are serious about their practice. Whether you shoot fine art, documentary, commercial or weddings, these sessions address the business and career questions that most photography education never covers. If you are just starting out, you are still welcome but the sessions assume you already know your way around a camera.

We keep each session small on purpose. A smaller room means real conversation, direct feedback, and the ability to ask the questions that actually matter to your specific situation. This is not a webinar — it is a working session.
A stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone. You do not need to prepare anything in advance. Coming with questions is encouraged.

You will receive a confirmation email and we will send another email with your session link, date, time, and everything you need to join.
